Activity 3 – Passage 2

Now continue practicing with a new passage from the story.

Think back again to the steps for generating a text-dependent question. Step One requires that students focus on core understandings. Additionally, remember to anchor your questions in the standards. Notice the portions of the standards that are highlighted that direct your attention to what is most important. Step Four requires students to tackle tough questions head on.

  • ELA-Literacy RL.3.1 - Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy RL.3.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language.

In this next passage from the story, the author describes the night sky in a beautiful way. This description is important to the overall meaning of the story and what ultimately happens to Trisha’s grandparents.  As you read this passage, notice the following words and phrases that bring this scene to life with regard to the final outcome for the grandparents:

  • “stars were holes in the sky”
  • “light of heaven”
  • “counted the lights from heaven.”
  • “let go of the grass,”

Locate Passage 2:

If you are reading the book, start on page 7 with the sentence that begins with, "As they walked, Trisha said, "Gramma, do you think I'm…different?"

End the passage on page 8 with the sentence, "School seemed harder and harder now."

If you are watching the video, begin listening at 3:55 and stop reading at 5:23.
